In ancient times, the first armies were individualistic in nature. Men would form lines only to break them up as they charged the battlefields and die mindlessly.

I have seen a lot of MobA games, and so many losses could have been prevented if only each team member would do their role or plan. Some even get lost in-game…

Before we get started though for first time readers, I am Zamboangamer and this blog is dedicated to advocate video games as a learning tool and a self-improvement blog. In particular, this series focuses on the MoBa games and the tricks and secrets to give you the razor’s edge, and win more games.

Lesson 1 covers what you need to know on how the pros think like in the game, with the need for better gameplay and wins.

Lesson 2 covers how to maximize your role as a hero in-game. A team that effectively uses the hero’s role makes better games and more chances of victories.

Lesson 3 covers team communication, a bit of player psychology and how you can rally your team to victory. Encouraging and good communication is the way to raise team morale, win games and make friends.

Lesson 4 deals with a better way to cope with those pesky defeats which creep up to you and ruins your day. It’s a must read.

And now we move on to the fifth lesson in the series which has taken a lot of research and study to compile and write. It’s also become a personal favorite of mine because since then, I have won more games than usual.

Ever wonder why you are always hit by Mirana’s or Ashe’s skill shot? Or how you could have avoided those AoE (Area-of-Effect) skills? Want to know the perfect way to catch the enemy off guard and make it off alive or with the enemy team wiped out?

This is why this post caters to formations. It is a secret to mastering warfare and why pro-gamers have the best plays that make you spam that replay button.

“When the victorious get their people to go to battle as if they were directing a massive flood of water into a deep canyon, this is a matter of formation.” -Sun Tzu

Formations have decided how armies would win the field. As a general your overview of how the battlefield works will determine victory or defeat. Of all the ancient armies that I have studied (HISTORY FTW!) it’s The Roman Legion that does the it the best. A lot of this generation look up to the Spartans with their recent movie 300. It is a movie that deals with the battle of Thermopylae and how the Spartans courageously fought even though they were outnumbered, while heroic in the eyes of many, military generals and scholars have seen easily seen the weaknesses and this is why the once glorified spartan armies have been conquered by an advanced foe. The Romans.

The Roman Legion was in my opinion the best army in ancient history, it expanded its empire through most of europe, north africa and the middle east. It’s armies were constantly improving and has become the basis for most modern-day armies today.

The key strengths that the Legion has is its disciple, flexibility and innovation. The army consisted of ranks that the Spartans did not have. They used every weapon from sword, spear, bow, siege engine and every man to his designated role. The generals studied their enemies and exploited every weakness they had. It was through the valiant effort of the Legion did the empire extend and lasted long. It’s legacy is even longer. To give you a glimpse of how the legion operates the YouTube clip below will give you a good idea. It was based on the movie Gladiator and a favorite childhood movie of mine.

Are you as pumped up then? Now comes the discussion part, try experimenting these formations with your team and see how it will better help you win.

These formations will cater to every MobA game and can be used in several situations. These are but a few examples and there are more.

wedge formation

This is a typical wedge formation some also call it the arrowhead. It is an ideal formation for pushing the lane. Ideally the tanks are the first to the frontline while other hero roles support it. Take note that this formation has weaknesses on both the sides and can be flanked.

If the enemy sneaks behind the tank must turn his attention behind the formation, never get squeezed between a tower and enemy heroes like the pincer formation (discussed later). When retreating it is best to break up or go together in one general direction, usually to the safest one.

Overall, this is the first of many offensive formations, a good hero selection including items will ensure your victory.

spearhead formation

This picture is the first prototype I made using paint, refer to the lower pictures for an improved diagram on what the roman numerals mean.

The spearhead formation is an offensive formation and can be perfectly used for attacking the enemy lanes. Tanks should be the tip of the spear followed by hitters and support. Either you are close enough to support each other or spare some distance between each hero is up to you, but the main point of this formation is to do as much damage as you can before making a run for it.

The weaknesses of this formation lies with the back area or sides. Enemies can easily exploit these areas and flank you so ward of the areas behind and have the map awareness to look out for them. When the enemy does flank you, turn the “tip of the spear” of the tank to the enemies, guide your team to an ambush spot or make a full retreat back to base.

Overall, Speed is your ally in this formation, make as much damage as you can in the lane and teleport or segway to other lanes. The tip of the spear must never be too far ahead otherwise team members can’t support directly.

Line Foramtion

The Line formation is similar to the arrowhead or spearhead but varies in the distance of the heroes and the direction on where your heroes are going to. This formation is inspired by the phalanx formation used by ancient Greeks to gain an advantage over their enemies.

Similar weaknesses also lie the said formations above, your best course of action when flanked by the enemy is to break off to every direction in hopes of gaining less attention from enemy heroes and teleport back to base or stand and fight. Sometimes sacrificing a hero while the others run back to the fountain is an ideal strategy, just make sure that every teammate understands the word sacrifice.

pincer formation

The Pincer formation is the ideal formation for clashing. It involves luring the enemy either at the lanes or jungles or the river that runes through the map.  Pincer formations are risky though. To enumerate the risks are:

1.Distance between you and your team

3.Enemy status (never try this formation if the enemy is too strong)

4.The hunter is now the hunted (this means that you are trapped)

5.The right skills (heroes need to have the right set of skills)

This formation’s weakness is a gamble. It requires precise planning and timing to pull it off. No wonder the best games are mostly streamed on video sites. These clashes are always fun to see, but in-game its the most mind-numbing, some get even lost due to the multiple spell casting. The tank or the ones in the middle of the clash are the most

Overall, your teamwork is tested with this maneuver, but the good thing here is the escape points indicated to arrows moving away from the clash area, your losses can be minimized simply by having the map awareness to the direction of retreat and attack.

Star Formation

The Star Formation is similar to the Pincer but different in terms of the number of enemies, one or two enemies can easily be outnumbered if you close in and finish them off quickly. It is a sure-clash formation but might also leave you vulnerable. The strength of this formation lies in every teammate contributing a skill to earn that nice bounty.

The weaknesses of the star formation is not every member of your team has equivalent stats, skills or items. It also make you vulnerable on all sides. Your main counter will be to stand and fight as one just like the Avengers in that awesome camera shot where they are circled by the enemy.Publicity photo from the film "The Avengers"

Overall, the Star Formation is good for closing in on weaker enemies but is risky if the tables are turned. Retreating can either be a coördinated smart move or a panicked messy one. Again team coördination is necessary.

tower defense

The Tower Formation

Using the towers in all stages of the game is a good defensive maneuver. The tower contributes the biggest damage early game, supports lane control in the middle game and annoys enemies during the late game (although they give out less damage).

The weaknesses lie in enumerated items below:

1.Tower’s limited attack range

2.Tower is stationary and its hit-points are low

3.Tower is vulnerable at late game stages due to enemy hero level and damage output

4.No allies to defend the tower or backdooring (damn that BD)

5.Allied Team is flanked and dead.

The Tower formation when used properly can pick off enemy heroes and aid you to launch an offensive counterattack, this tactic is known in the MobA game but is rarely acknowledged. Treat the tower as your sixth-man instead of a commodity and the tower’s full potential is unleashed.

Use these formations and discover new ones, Let me know what you think of these, comments, suggestions, likes, support, criticisms and discussions are welcome below. Keep on’ gamin 🙂

Currently this post was delayed for some time, I struggled with my schedules and the topic of formations in the works, it would probably be shifted to the 5th lesson in the series. And if you did not know, This blog caters to learning about video games and responsible gaming with fun. It started a year ago and now we are particular in focusing our attention on the MoBa which covers all kinds of games like DotA, LoL, HoN, Strife and even that evil EA LoL clone that is Dawngate (shutting down in 90 days.)…I never played Dawngate XD

Other posts in this series include:

Lesson 1 covers what you need to know on how the pros think like in the game, with the need for better gameplay and wins.

Lesson 2 covers how to maximize your role as a hero in-game. A team that effectively uses the hero’s role makes better games and more chances of victories.

Lesson 3 covers team communication, a bit of player psychology and how you can rally your team to victory. Encouraging and good communication is the way to raise team morale, win games and make friends.

Moving on, in this post we talk about DEFEAT!

570_screenshots_2013-12-14_00001    League of Legends 2010-06-12 16-14-44-53

Surely every MoBa player fears, loathes, and despises this word for it puts them on a curse of humiliation, rank down, etc. And these funny memes show what most players think about their team and the enemy’s

Surely I have acquired a number of defeats. I also get frustrated and irritated when I lose games, but recently I have come to think on the consequences of defeat and researched the psychology of losing. To summarize, players who lose, tend to do everything negative. defense mechanisms take place to vent out the stress, that could mean verbally cursing, throwing stuff, punching something and even crying. The worst part is they would play another round in hopes of winning, this is risky because when they lose again the negativity is doubled.

For those unaware of what this can do for your psychological and mental health, its obvious that losing is negative,it can hurt your relationships with others as well. but it doesn’t mean that we can cope. For the mature player, defeat is like tripping on something, the first thing to do is recover and stand back again. Let me give you an example,

Dad practices Judo, as I have observed. Their training is unlike other martial arts which emphasize offensive moves like kicking, punching or defensive moves like countering, evading and blocking. In Judo, every beginner or white belt practices “FALLING”.

I asked dad how it was different from other martial arts. Dad told me that “…to be trained to fall is to know how to get back up”. Meditating on this philosophy has given me good insight on how losing can work to an advantage when playing the game. The secret is to “let it go” (not that damned song) To let go means to let the negativity away, don’t even “block” that negativity because it requires a lot of mental energy. In other words, when you lose, just promise yourself to do better next time.

Other tips I can give you to let go of that negativity is:

1. When you lose a game, don’t immediately play another.

Me and my buddies would frequent two games, if we lose both games then we stop and call it a night. I play other games: Borderlands the Pre-sequel, The Sims 4 and etc. These games are passive in its pacing, not requiring intense competition to play.

2. Do not play pub games

Pub games means that you play with strangers of whom you do not know of what skill levels they are. Pub games account for most of game defeats, stay away if you do not want to risk defeat.

3. Consider playing with a team

Playing with friends you know can lessen that negativity but be warned if you are the fault for why your team losing the match. Friends are a two-sided coin, they will either sympathize with your loss or insult you further.

4.Play Practice Matches

Sometimes, it’s good to get back to the basics. Whether it’s how to last hit or do denials or test out that new hero, practicing often can improve your skills and hopefully win you more games.

5.Use the heroes that you know

Sometimes, using heroes that you are familiar with improves the chances of winning games. Just make sure to do number 4 (above) as well.

6.When you lose, just stop playing and do other activities.

Sometimes, when I lose, writing, watching anime, dancing, gardening or other activities takes me out of that negative energy and refocuses that energy on something productive. Find what you love to do and have fun with it

7.Play it differently.

That means applying different tactics or things that you could have done to make you win the last game. Tactics and strategies apply. Think on it and apply new ones to help win the next games.

Losing a game does not automatically make you a loser in life. “Winners never quit and quitters never Win” is an overly used maxim but think on it on a deeper level. If you can’t think deep enough let me try to explain it better with my realization and example.

To quit is to not experience life’s pleasures, to quit is not to know about yourself because you stopped, to quit is to make you static and ordinary, which is quit is to be a spectator to people who are succeeding in all aspects of life.  To win however is different which is good. To win means to practice the talents that God has given you even if it means that you have to stumble over and over and continuously fail. The important thing is to get back up again.

I believe the best quote that gives me the goosebumps which relates to gaming is Robin Hood’s “Rise and Rise till Lambs become Lions.” This quote inspires me to always get back in the game to fight and win. Losses just means I have to apply myself in a different or unique way, ever since that realization losing in video games has not been a big issue to me because that is the essence of a video game. It’s supposed to make you learn, remember that there is no game over. A death just means a respawn at the home base.

Many games are won by good communication as a big factor. Would you rather hear a complimenting thumb-up for destroying that tower or an insulting dagger at your back for kill-stealing?

The secret of winning through chat within in the game is simple if you can be mature enough to understand the importance of teamwork. I have seen too many players abuse the chatbox only to be frustrated and lose the game, lose their friends and lose everything.

So if you want a chance at winning then read on.

1. The Beginning

Once you are logged in to the game the first things you will certainly do is pick those skills, buy some items and head on into the lane. This is the best time to communicate your strategy, who you will be with, how will you support one another and if possible put in a good word. typing in “lets have a good game” or some other inspiring sentence will do wonders to lift the team spirit. You want to be positive at the start even if the outcome is uncertain. Who knows…the other team may have intimidating heroes but lesser-skilled players with lag spikes 🙂

2. The Early Laning Phase

This phase will determine the rest of the gameplay, so chats are very important in this point. Cooldowns are some of the things you need to take note so let’s say you have gotten your SS and you have just recently casted it. It helps to chat your teammates with example: “SS CD 60 secs”. This means that your ultimate skill has a cooldown of 60 seconds which will give you and your teammates time to delay or plan out your attack or defense accordingly. Typing in OOM or low mana will signal to your team that you might not have enough to cast a skill. Another trick is to type in how many times you can cast a certain skill or if you got 1 more card up your sleeve before making a run home or going for a quick regen via potion.

When you do get back to the fountain to pick up items or regenerate your health, at least say “brb”, if things are a bit heated because your health is low and the enemy is bringing in a huge creep wave then type in “hold,i reg n tp” this will mean that you are telling your ally to hold the tower while you go back to base and then teleport back to your ally for added backup.

In this phase, you communicate or you die…alot. Knowing the difference will enhance your survival rates and carry you through for the mid and late game.

3. Apologize

Sometimes mistakes and setbacks can drag the whole team down. Be humble enough to apologize and say that you will help the team recover at the next opportunity. Selfish and arrogant players are soon to be reported or banned from playing the entire game, so watch your behavior and do your par

4. Map Awareness

Using the mis or signaling enemies if they went off the map is a sign of respect and concern to your allies. The last thing you want to hear is “wtf why no warn O_O” from your allies. Pings are handy too, the secret to pinging is to do it not once but three times. Three times will indicate attention and the intensity of the situation. If there was a morse code you can learn from, it’s this:

3 Pings on darkened map location – Missing hero/heroes, Danger.

2 Pings on ally side – Go here, Set up Ambush, Need Aid.

1 Ping behind ally hero – Fall back, Be careful.

Other pings may indicate otherwise, this is what I use in game, Now that the secret is out, I may as well share it. Other games have the ping wheel where player commands are summarized into nifty ping-and-tell signals. This is handy in a pinch, so use them wisely.

5. AFK-ing

When your loved ones are asleep or your girlfriend has given permission to play, everything feels so right. The timing couldn’t be better…until you really need to go AFK (Away from Keyboard), maybe you nature calls you really badly or you want to fix a snack while the game is gonig on. At least type in AFK for a bit cuz I (state your reason). Mature players will understand this as long as you get back in the game and speed level. Never type in AFK and be away from the keyboard permanently.

6.The Mid Game Phase

The mid games is the juicy part. Towers will usually be taken down by the mid game, but it also helps to keep up the communications instead of staying quiet. Map awareness (No.4) is put to good use here. Setting up clashes, ambushes, wards, rune taking or jungling will come into consideration too so be mindful of the chat box. As you go further into enemy territory knowing when to advance or retreat is necessary.

7.That Boss

Whether its Kongor, Baron Nashor or Roshan, this requires good teamwork to take them down, it could also mean sacrificing the defense of the lanes for extra gold. Take caution and consider if the enmey might be in the same spot. Whenever someone types in that boss name, you can choose to agree to go with or to give the enemy a distraction by pushing the lane. Responding politely with tactics in mind will help your team get the cheese and whatever item that is XD.

8.The Late Game Phase

If you are on the winning side of the game then call it in to finally end the game. A coordinated strike with your teammates win you the game but remember to be level-headed. Games can sometimes turn the tables and it’ll be you on the losing end. Always encourage your teammates to end the game fast. This is to prevent the enemy from taking a foothold in establishing the right counters for your team, it also means that you will be able to play more games.

On the losing end however means that team morale is low. Encourage a quick defense, rally your team to turn the tide against the enemy and to your favor. Those near loss games really make it memorable. When it really comes down, a last stand will gain you the respect of your enemies, but sometimes its better to stick with the fountain until the game ends. And if you have done the best you could following this guide, then you might even gain some friends.

9. Dealing with the Enemy

Taunts hardly work in the game, unless you are a master of psychological warfare then you could use this to demotivate your enemy but game ethics would define this as verbal harassment. The best thing you can do is be honorable in treating your opponents. To be silent throughout the game limits enemy harrassment of you, and if your teammate is being picked on, tell your teammate to save that anger and vengeance and deal it to the enemy by killing the hero, this will shut your opponent up.

The best value when playing the game is summarized in a quote “Humble in victory and gracious in defeat.”

When you lose the game, its normal to be frustrated and angry, to blame your teammate is what you would do, but a Pro knows better than that. Never ever blame your teammates, you are part of the team and if you could not carry your team to victory then the falut also lies with you.

10. Substitute Trashtalking

Probably the best action to not be reported for verbal harrassment is to simply substitute words on chat, instead of the word “shit” why not use “biscuit” or “crap”? It sounds corny at first but as you allow yourself to say it, frustration will lessen. All too often to games are lost due to the excessive spamming of vulgar words. Mature players know that “cursing” is okay as long as it is in its proper place. With a majority of MoBA players being of younge age, you can even “correct” them that it’s not right to type in bad words.

More on trashtalking later. But with these 10 steps, it’ll really help improve your game.

Do the words, Tank, Hitter, Support mean anything to you? Then this is the next lesson you need to learn, for many who are already familiar with the MoBA heroes and their roles then this will be brief and self explanatory but for the rest of the audience, this is where you can learn to fully unleash that hero potential.

There are many roles to play and some have secondary or sub-classes according to their skills or item combinations.Your playstyle will depend upon which class you can use to its fullest.

The Tank

This beefy role focuses on outlasting your opponents while you or your teamates finish them off. The tank usually focuses on items that will give a defensive edge over physical, critical, magical or true damage. Think of a mighty knight plated with the best armor(physical resist) with trinkets(magic resist) and pillows (extra padding).Tanks leave a mighty impression with many players and a tanks role in clashing is as important for the “kill zone” is riddled with hiddne mines, overly powerful wizards and

The Hitter

Hitters are the people who give opponets a run for their gold. Bandits,Assassins,Warriors,Mercenaries and etc are classified to be hitters. They might not be as armored as the Tank but Hitters are essential to dish out damage in the field. Hitters usually focus their item builds on damage and life-steal items to give them more survivability. The hitter roles are very popular in pub games and many players take on the roles of hitters for personal glory. A mature hitter knows how to fill out the role, give credit to their team and ultimately win the match. Tip: Don’t go as a hitter when everyone in your team already picked one. Unless you can alternate the role of a tank and hitter then best you get a pure tank

The Marksman

Similar to the Hitter, the Marksman deals damage, the difference is range. While hitters go in for the kill via melee combat, Marksman deal damage from afar, whether it’s an arrow, bolt, bullet,or spell the marksman can be the most lethal teamate or opponent that you can have. Marksmen go for items that enhance their attack speed and damage. Their strength also belies thier weakness due to the fact that they can be taken down easily when you pair up with a teammate that can stun and disable them, so be careful when playing as a Marksman.

The Carry

A hero that carries you through the game is a champion of its own class. Carries are usually packing up utility items that can be handy in a pinch. In a desperate situation who wouldn’t want to turn the tide around? Carries are heroes that understand the value of sacrifice. Sometimes your teammates are complete noobs, under-leveled or fed the enemy. The Carry is usually one step ahaed of the rest. Their item combiantions are wildcards depending on the situation of the game. They can aslo be a jack-of-trades if needed.

The Support

As stated in the previous lesson Supports lift the team up with their skills, but you must never go alone, your best bet is to go with an ally in a lane and boost him up. Those disables skills such as slow and stun will do wonders to the team cause. Playing support heroes are an advanced skill at bes

The Warden

A subclass of its own, Wardens are responsible for lighting up the map with pings, and sight items. Any role can play a warden as long as they have the finances to back this up. Let’s face it, wards and sight items are costly and expendable, but the payoff is worth it. Added sightlines allow you to know what the enemy is up to and will determine the strategies you require to win the game.

-I will update this entry with regards to player suggestions or guidelines. Have fun playing 🙂

Was playing a LoL match earlier and we got a victory if not for a certain someone who took command of the game. Forgive the last sentence if it meant bragging but the point I want to get across is that to be a better at playing video games that need competitive skills then you must decide and learn to level up your gaming. This post will make sure that many traits from pro-gamers are listed so you can win more and play more.

1. Be a leader

Sometimes things will not work out for many in the gamer community are self-serving and glory hogging players who just want all the kills and winning for them is secondary. You can use this to your advantage by stirring their hearts and minds. Why do you think history recognizes the names of leaders instead of the nameless soldier in the trenches? Simply put, it’s the leaders who organize goals and direct their troops to win. Next time you play LoL why not take command from the start? Your teammates will sense that your orders are correct and will follow it. The thought of losing is trauma to everyone who has already experienced it. Be a good leader and not one that overuse his/her authority.Inspire and you will lead the team to victory!

2. Be a Patient Tactician

EPSON scanner imageI love Sun Tzu’s Art of War and among the many tacticians in history perhaps the best example would be Zhuge Liang, a master strategist of his time, he led the Shu faction to a lot of victories with his cunning and planning. To win more games requires strategy, When to advance or fall back, when to set up ambushes and clashes, what items to buy and recommend for teammates. All factors come into play with the right strategy. And even at the brink of defeat, a well detailed and easy to follow battle plan may turn the tables around. Be the cunning tactician, study well, and victory is assured.

3. Be the Best Support

Most beginners or players take on the hitter roles and greedily add the kill counts, when you play support though it’s a playstyle on a different level. Supports do the healing, buffing or disabling so that your other teammates finish the job. You might not get the kills but being the support boosts the team’s chances of victory. Sometimes supports are either hidden from the spotlight, or shine brightly throughout. Support heroes are hard to master and players who choose and play them well are the rare kind.

4. Be less Vulgar

Many games are against vocal harassment or cursing in general. Sure you can throw a few swear words now and then, I’ve done it a lot of it in the past. But online profanity does not make you better due to its reflected negativity. It brings down the team when you swear on someone, or spam it in the chat box. Remember that good manners and etiquette still count in-game and in real life.

I trashtalked a lot during college, believe me when it doesn’t make for a meaningful conversation or gain self-esteem. I lessened down over the years and although it won’t be gone,at least the awareness is there to help me keep tempers in check.

You might not be able to erase the vulgarity of words that have been engraved within the recesses of your mind but you can certainly lessen or substitute it. More on this on another article.

5. Keep on Studying/Improving

The best way for any gamer to learn is practice, practice, practice. It governs not only online games but real life as well. In-game battles are always unique so you must adapt and learn from each experience, even if you’ll play the same map, over and over and over again.

With each level, upgrade, skill learned, it makes you a better player and a better person in life. It’s in out philosophy here in Zamboangamer to improve upon your existing talents or discover it. As a gamer

If you look at the most successful people in the world today they would mostly be businessmen of every sort. It has always been that way ever since merchants and traders started buying and selling goods in ancient history.

Skip to the modern era and you will find that many countries are run on a system, this system that increases wealth is called capitalism, basically it’s the same system that gets gaming companies to sell lots and lots of games. Sometimes these games are either great ones that are worth bang for your buck and sometimes its the bad kind that make you think why the hell did they made this crap?!

Thorughout the years, I myself have experienced the good, bad and ugly in games. Every year was either a good or bad one, and ever since most gaming companies did it for the money, it was not good news for us gamers who wanted our dreams to be held in more capable hands.

The good news is that indie games made it into existence and former game developers from big companies are shifting their jobs to make better games. It’s better to be your own boss than to slave from some corporate sleazeball.

Not to say that every company is generally greedy or corrupt, but they gotta survive too, such is also the tale of a particular item shop called Recettear.

recettear 2014-07-09 10-11-48-27

I accidentally stumbled on this game with Steam, it’s preview images made me nostalgic of older games on the PSP, Nintendo DS, I had to find it since I was also a sucker for anime games.

Recettear was unique in its gameplay in that it gives you the role of an item shop seller, quite different from the role of a loot-collecting adventurer, but your initial impression of a shop merchant won’t be a disappointment.

Recettear follows the story of Recette, she’s a typical good and cute girl whose ditziness you will sure to love, Wondering why a girl her age is running an item shop then? That’s when the story starts…recettear 2014-07-09 10-14-24-66

One morning a fairy named Tear wakes her up to tell her that her father (an wanna-be adventurer) has mysteriously gone missing and that he has acquired a massive amount of debt and that if no payment is given then the house will be given over to the authorities.

Recette could not handle the shock and does not know what to do… Tear has a suggestion however and helps Recette to pay off the debt by turning part of the house into a business, and in a town of adventurers the most profitable venture is…an item shop.

The game runs just as a visual novel/simulation/rpg game. From the very start I got hooked with it. The colorful anime art and music will satisfy that craving for anime-themed games. The characters themselves are full of personality and the japanese voice-overs are sure to delight your cuteness needs.

As much as the game is liken to a slice of life in a medieval fantasy realm, the chunk of the game is based on running the item shop or Recettear (I bet you can guess the name now). If you have run games that involve shopping, trading, mercantile systems then this game will latch on you like a leech. You will learn how to haggle, barter, and deal with each customer you get.

If this seems overwhelming then don’t worry Tear will guide you via tutorial so read and understand. You might not be certain on how to start the running the shop at first but once you get used to item prices on the market and selling your stuff to your customers, then you will get the pattern once you buy better items later. The main tip is to BUY LOW and SELL HIGH.

At the end of each day (4 timeframes) Tear will assess your work. Don’t get too comfortable selling though, remember you have debt to pay at the end of each week. It’s handy to keep spare notes around for item prices. (I did not consult any wiki on this).

Sometimes, you might find yourself lacking on items or money to buy them. This calls for some dungeon crawling, head on to the adventurers guild and get someone to hunt items on you, you start out with Louie a poor swordsman who survives on a daily basis. He has skills though and sometimes buys form your store. There are alot of adventureres you will meet though, from a know-it-all mage, to an aloof woman with no sense of direction you meet at a dungeon. All sorts await at Recettear.

At almost every 5 stages or so, are the boss stages, most are nostalgic of earlier rpg games and it’s up to you to find their weaknesses. Mostly their behaviors are patterned on a certain attack basis so pack up some food to defeat them.

Overall Recettear gets a 9/10. 9 being the game is “ubber fantastic”, and while the game does present some difficulty, it still is addicting as ever.

What does happen if you don’t pay the debt? well… that’s for you to find out. Hopefully you won’t allow that to happen to Recette, right?

And now for gaming morals. I actually learned alot from the game especially on entrepreneurship. I am experiencing it first hand working for a cosplay shop named Sugarfluff, and this game is a reference point to help improve the shop too. I will write about that later but for now here is what I have learned from Recettear.

-Buy Low,Sell High, but not to the point that greed takes over your main objective.

-Debt can be bad, but if you pay it as consistenly as you can then it helps you to get back up when life pushes you down.

-Sometimes life will force you to do things that you are not prepared to do, don’t be afraid to ask help from others.

-Running a business is hard, but when you do it and imagine it as a game you need to win or reach the high score, then you are bound to succeed.

-Start small, you don’t need millions of money to make a business, the most successful and richest ones in the world started from a simple idea or they rode the ones that were trending.

-Business is war, prepare thyself for if you are not competing with others, then you compete with yourself.

-If ever you are thinking of making a video game, why not make one based on road’s less travelled? Recettear took a route that was diffferent from all those other games with big sword wielding heroes or scantily clad healer stereotypes.

-Take care of your friends and they will take care of you.

-Life can actually be a good RPG, but it still depends on how you play it.

-Indie games are video game promises fulfilled.

I am having fun blogging again everyone, till the next post 🙂

Zamboangamer has been meaning to use that title for a very long time now and we finally have the review for Rome 2: Total War, A latest in the Total War Series that goes back to a time of ancient empires without the cloned soldiers that the original RTW featured.

Rome 2 Total War is one of the most hoped and anticipated games of 2013. Upon its release however, things did not go out with a bang as they should and Zamboangamer is also a bit disappointed in this. Zamboangamer has never wanted this post to point out the flaws of games. But it’s the truth

I will tell you why exactly why you should wait longer to get the game than it’s release date and while this post is a month late. It still holds some valuable truths to why you should not get this game.

First off, Rome Total War 2 is among 2013’s most anticipated PC games. It is a direct sequel to Rome Total War which featured 3D graphics and armies on a massive scale,a pioneering move at it’s time. Throughout the years the Total War series featured more improvements, bigger battles and empire-building.

Rome2 2013-10-21 11-42-32-18

Ah Rome, the city of the seven hills, home to emperors and mighty legions. Once a underdog republic that became one of the greatest historical influences of the world. It is Rome, and as Zamboangamer has played the Julli family from RTW, then it is befitting that I play its legacy too since the Roman Legions are mighty. There are other factions to play with such as the Greek City States (a DLC with everyone’s favorite Spartans) Macedon, Egypt, Persia, Carthage,Gaul and other tribes and empires which were expand from the original game.

Let’s talk about the economic aspect of the game. Mighty armies need taxes fro equipment and food to fill their stomachs. Without both the army cannot stand. Taxing the population is a must for building armies but you risk revolt from overtaxing them.

Rome2 2013-10-21 12-09-49-96

You will have to build buildings on your major settlements and cities to help fund the economy, trade routes on land and sea are valuable for bringing the needed funding. You increase this with diplomatic relations with other factions (soon to be conquered).

Rome2 2013-10-21 12-10-17-36Rome2 2013-10-21 12-11-55-52

The economic side of RTW2 is simplistic in its approach as taxes are defaulted. Choosing between buildings can go a long way as your city upgrades. You do need some decision making from time to time as certain building bonuses are present. Do I need more funds from this or increase public order? Should I make more recruitment buildings or tear down one to make room for the temples? These questions make it fun to play. It won’t take much of your time at first. But as you expand your empire this will have to be addressed as you go from macro to micromanagement.

Capturing land now requires some effort as there are provincial bonuses to be had once you unite the province itself. Rome needs two more minor provinces up to the north in order for edicts to be issued which benefits your faction in several ways.

Diplomacy on the other hand is a tricky business. Playing the Roman Faction is tough since the A.I will be aggressive in trying to conquer you so be prepared. Your first enemy is the Etruscan League which will become more numerous if you want to fight up north to the south, Carthage will be your main rival and Greeks to the east.

Most of the time as you increase your wealth factions will want to get trade relations with you up and running. This could work to your advantage if you need certain resources not available to your nation now. The A.I is fickle with diplomacy and I think this needs an update just like the other components of the game.

There is also a political system to explore. Remember this as you progress through the game because it plays a semi-major role. Rome itself has 3 factions which are controlled by a senate. The more you get people to support you the more the senate and the other factions in your empire get jealous and may attempt assassinations on your family members.

Rome2 2013-10-21 12-12-32-99    Rome2 2013-10-21 12-09-56-77

The Goals or Quests for Rome follow a pattern that is likened to history. Complete these goals for bonuses and recognition. You find as you expand your empire, these goals are usually completed easily.

Now it’s on to the good part the War itself!

RTW 2 has improved from its predecessor Shogun 2 Total War which was another sequel from STW. There is a uniqueness to the soldiers that were cloned from the original RTW. Soldiers sport several armor sets complete with individualized faces. It is a joy to see them, Zamboangamer has even researched that a super fan who died due to cancer was given a tribute by being one of those soldiers. Now I just got to find him.

Rome2 2013-10-21 11-56-54-90 Rome2 2013-10-21 11-53-51-75 Rome2 2013-10-21 11-49-27-85 Rome2 2013-10-21 11-47-59-01

Zamboangamer is delighted to see a Roman Legion once more. the unit detail is amazing to look at and you will really feel them marching of to war and doing battle. Unit cards are based on the battalions that you command. They somehow are irritating since they take some space on the screen, luckily they can be minimized. Battles are more of the rock-paper-scissor type of games that Total War Series is known for. Spears beat horse, horse beats bow, bow beats swords and swords beat spears. Two identical units will have to be better in numbers and equipment to win.  The moral factor stands out to rout the enemy or you so be careful not to let stragglers escape such as the enemy general or try not to get your own killed.

Rome2 2013-10-21 12-08-59-60 Rome2 2013-10-21 11-56-23-58 Rome2 2013-10-21 11-45-20-35

Unfortunately its the battles that also disappoint me and here is why. the FRIKKIN A.I, I can easily conquer armies even on hard mode and that seems unfair. The enemy will start of sending skirmishers and just be peppered down by my own units. I have experimented on this A.I for a long time since it’s release and I feel it is my right to tell the other gamers not to get this game till they fix and update it. So we might have to wait further.

Naval battles are now included which were not featured in the last game. I only knew Triremes up until this point, but it turns out RTW2 gives new units to play with. These ships are mostly rammers and naval combat turn out to be more of skirmishes that are less enjoyable than the land battles. They are also depending upon your empire to be more or less frequent. Rome is more land based so other factions such as Carthage, Egypt or the Greek City States can really get naval wars up and running.

Overall RTW2 might not be for most players due to its early and buggy release. Creative Assembly is doing its best to make the game better, I just wished it didn’t release the game so early with all of these crashes, glitches, errors and unsatisfying A.I. Till then its back to Cloned Soldiers or Japan Feudal Wars before coming back to this. How far do we go for Rome then?

Graphics: The Graphics are gorgeous eye-candy which feel cinematic in its experience. Slower computers (like mine) may have a hard time enjoying it. But it is still a joy to look at. The game camera can get into those moments with a cinematic mode. Battles are definitely something to look forward to due to the carnage. No more cloned soldiers is another plus factor of the game.

Sound: The ancient music mixes Roman, Celtic, Greek, Eastern, Egyptian moods which is an eargasm. I did want Angela van Dyk to sing a new credits song since its a trademark. Sound effects really get you to the battlefields as sword clash and orders are shouted onto deafening screams of enemy troops charging in.

Gameplay: As discussed earlier the game is buggy as heck. You have to wait for further patches to better the game. Don’t believe in all the hype ads and youtube vids for now.

Lessons: Rome was not built in a day and so should this game be.

Historical games are a good way to practice thinking and research. This game is full of it so get your pens and papers ready.

Study the lives of the people in the ancient age. They are just as the same as you and me now in our modern age.

Till the next Zamboangamer Review

Buenas Dias fellow Zamboanguenos, this post was delayed for yesterday due to the blackout.

Looking back at the PSP, I am happy to have played so many games on it. The RPG’s where my favorites. But among them came a game that I really loved to play and that is Valkyria Chronicles 2.

This is the second game in the series that was exclusively for the PSP, the first game is exclusively on the PS3, that leads to a WTF moment. I had to do some research and watch the anime. It tells of a story of two warring factions, the Republic and Empire, (sounds familiar) caught in between is a small country of Galia. Let me summarize it for you.

Galia is a small independent country which is fiercely defended by it’s militia. It is vital to both the Empire and the Republic due to its high mineral resources used for the war. There is also a back-story regarding ancient Asgardians with mystical powers and a crisis with discriminating Darcsens

Valkyria Map

As you watch the anime and play Valkyria Chronicles it becomes clear that many of the features in that game are carried over to this portable version which improves upon the gameplay.

Fast forward to VC2 timeline, There are still remnants to the war as a new faction rises to throw the government. The Gallian Revolutionary Army which takes advantage of the weakened Gallian Army.

So it’s up to the militia to get to work once again. But this time they come from an elite military academy which can size up to Hogwarts.

Lanseal Military Academy

Speaking of the game movies they are uniquely done just like an anime should be, the watercolor paint style really does blend in and makes it look retro and child-like which is a good thing. They even add up some World War I and II cinematography which faded out yellow and sepia imagery.

In the story you take on the role of Avan Hardins, the typical dorky, oblivious and easily-impressed protagonist that enrolls in Lanseal after an attack on his village. Wanting to follow his older brother Leon’s footsteps and investigating his disappearance.

Avan meets two more of his future comrades Cosette and Zeri. They are fated to go to class G together (reminds me of my college days) and they meet with the rest of their fellow classmates.

Life in Lanseal is a mix of the usual college-life infused with the strict military codes. Love-swooned couples, playful antics and friendships develop as you play the game. In class the students learn subjects ranging to Politics,History,Literature, Military Tactics and Stratagems (boy would I love to enroll here!)

In the training fields students are tasked to capture, hold, and do mock-battles that will serve them on the battlefield. This is where your first taste of combat training comes. Combat is turn based and relies on a stamina bar for movement limit.

There are 5 different classes that each specialize in dealing with the enemy. Avan from the beginning is by default a scout but he can change classes if you want. I kept him as a scout since most of his stats do best this way.

Scouts: Fast but lightly armored, can do long range movement and attacks with the rifles. Equipped with grenades for enemy clusters. Use them to gather recon or flanking.

Shocktroopers: Medium in movement and armor, can finish off enemy squads with machine guns, equipped with grenades perfect for enemies in cover. use them for assaults, defensive and flanking tactics.

Lancers: Anti-tank infantry, medium range of movement, heavily armored against explosives. Uses rockets/lances to deal enemy damage. Deploy only with enemy vehicles present as a tip. Does well against heavily armored units too.

Engineers: The medics/mechanics, lightly armored and good range of movement. Uses pistols for short range combat. equipped with medpacks for allied infantry and wrenches for allied vehicles. Best used for support purposes and close ranged combat with light armored units.

Armor Tech:The melee-class excels in close quarters combat. Low movement range but heavily armored. Equipped with hammer, shield and grenades. Use well against entrenched enemies or defending escort targets.Best used as a vanguard or sentinels with base and flanking maneuvers by the enemy.

These classes can specialize into 2 sub-classes as they level up later on.

maxresdefault valkyria-chronicles-ii_71507 vc2-1

There is also a Tank and it sure is handy for taking out lots of enemies at early levels. You are also responsible for your squads loadout so start investing cash and experience points for better and bigger guns built by blueprints.

valkyria-chronicles-2_1276978583 valkyria-chronicles-2_1276979060

The achievements made are better than medals themselves. You can name your squadron from the default Class G and make them something that suits your tastes. And taking about Class G, you guys are a class of underdogs that will have to rise up in the rank as starting out means you start with the worst missions and the worst gear.

Each member of class G has their own story lines and sub-quests which can improve their combat stats as Avan helps them, so get them out on the front lines as much as possible. You would also want to complete the many challenges, missions before ending the campaign.

Class G really feels like family, The lack of a romance plot in this game is a let-down to most fans of the franchise and many are building fan-made Avan-ships.

As I finish the game the campaign tones down to focus more on the fighting, with every quest done and every gear upgraded to the max, the ending was really graduation time. I would like a sequel of this game to find out what happened after they go their separate ways.

Graphics: The water-color and anime style art will get many fans excited to start cosplaying as their favorites. It makes use of the powerful processor unit of the PSP to deliver a rich content that rivals the PS3 which featured the first game.

Sound: The melodic tunes of military fanfare, romantic, and comedy blend well in the game. Voice-overs are solid but I would have liked it if every dialogue was voiced. the sound effects could be better but that’s just possibly too much for the PSP to handle.

Gameplay: Much of the gameplay from VC was carried over to VC2 with added features such as more customization, class specialization, sub-quests and achievements. The plot branches into other sub-stories with connections but the main plot has really been to vanquish the Galian Revolutionaries, and while the Valkyria comes into play it only plays as an overpowered opponent on the field and nothing more.

Overall: VC2 gets a 8/10, if you have a PSP till now then get it. You will not be dissapointed. The game takes a long time to accomplish. Multiplayer is great but beginners might be overpowered easily by the more skilled players with higher tier gear. Again we apologize this segment to be delayed. The blackouts hindered the progress of publication.

Lessons: Treat your friends as loyal as you can, helping them solve their problems goes a long way. And that allows them to treat you better.

Studying hard can really put you on a better future. We are fortunate to be spared from the recent crisis of armed conflict.

Salute our brave men and women fighting out there on the fields of battle. They ensure your freedom.

What’s up fellow gamers? I saved a lot of stuff on the tablet that I could use for my reviews and I asked myself earlier, I should really write one now as it has been a long time since.

Imagining taking command of a massive bunch of armed warships was sometimes my childhood fantasy, ever since Starcraft…no this is not a review about that game, I have been absolutely engrossed with Terrans and their tech. The marine armor-powered suits are awesome and once you get to build Battle-cruisers and fleets of Valkyries and Wraiths it was pure ecstasy.

That dream came true…well not in real life but I do have a game that I can pour my heart into and that’s Strikefleet Omega

Zamboangamer came to this game by accident while searching the endless space of google playstore. The game starts out with your role as Admiral of a command ship, and after an brief introduction a massive invasion of insect-like ships come festering in from all sectors of the screen. They are led by a zerglike queen (Kerrigan was hotter).

Your ship is in the center. An impressive ship that has a basic fighter garrison and a mining crew. The objective of the game is to defend your capital ship from the enemy hordes. To do this you need to direct an attack-move command to a destination. Tap the number then drag it out, The fighters will automatically attack the enemy and if they get destroyed don’t worry, replacements follow.

Minerals come flooding in automatically with mine workers, and these minerals are used to create the rest of your fleet from fighters, interceptors, bombers ships which will dish out squads. These other squads specialize in taking out bigger enemy ships such as this one:

After the battles are down you warp into other systems. Ever since Earth was destroyed in the first level it’s not the same. In the armory you will be given a choice of upgrades and new ships which cost the standard currency. The more specialized ships costs real money.

Gaining the currency is hard work. Luckily once Survival mode is unlocked there is only the daunting challenge of conquering 100 waves lying before you and those credits. A pause button for a quick strategic review is good to have, and a fast forward button for those who want to skip the action and get on with achievements.

The achievement page is really a treat and make you feel like you are really rewarded for your efforts. A moment of silence for our brave fighters. These rewards add experience and credit points that you need to save up for a new ship or upgrade.

Overall the game is a good portable pick-me-up for aspiring admirals who want to take a break from the usual Starcraft saga that is if you love Terrans.

Graphics: The game’s graphic presentation is great for a mobile game of its caliber. Spaceship design is top-notch and seems to be inspired from other sci-fi shows and movies. Enemy designs are dark and insect-like depicting the evil alien race stereotype villains. Explosions and dogfights are always a joy to watch.

Sound: Expect sci-fi sound effects and electronic music to fit the edges of your tablet. Basic lasers to artillery shelling are expected of this game. Nothing significant to get an LSS from, and you might be better of playing rock music to really feel the action.

Gameplay: Directing squadrons of fighters, miners, interceptors, and bombers is the essence of this game as a space admiral. You really can feel the commanding presence of establishing patrol, intercepting, offensive and defensive routes. You might want to start developing strategic patterns to suit the enemy movement as they come form all sides. Warping other ships that are necessary to target enemy weaknesses is a must but one cannot deny the deployment of fighters as they are the earliest and possibly the core unit of the game.

Overall: Get this game if you are kinda bored with standards. Zamboangamer has only seen this game unique among others due to its gameplay. It’s gameplay is one that can be developed on and it could also do with some public exposure. an 8/10 from Zamboangamer That’s what this blog is for. Now I gotta get back and reach that level 100 in survival mode.

Hey gamers haven’t been online yesterday since Zamboangamer is writing this review for a while. It’s now time for another throwback Thursday with DotA, the massively popular Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) played in the internet cafes. Yes it’s that old going back to as far as 2005 and boy are those maps ancient indeed. Zamboangamer only played recently and that was 2007 (6.25), 4th year high school. The last major event Zamboangamer played was…2012(6.75)  in a college reunion. It’s been so long.

For this review we feature some items that are to Zamboangamer’s taste. This game is massively popular and is a game that me and my friends would play along with counter-strike. So many wins and few losses. Thus was my promising career… Wait we are doing a review not a biography!

DotA is a game of strategy and role-playing elements. It is an endless war of combinations and heroes and with each round is a different experience. You control a hero who turns the tide of battle. In this review we randomed one such hero, Huskarr, the Sacred Warrior

By the way, Zamboangamer is playing against A.I’s this time. Huskarr is categorized as a Strength hero, there is another category such as Agility and Intelligence. Strength heroes are known for high HP regen and damage. Huskarr is also a ranged hero, this makes him special since most Strength heroes are melee ones. As a hero you turn the tide of the battle by gathering XP and Gold from creeps. The XP is used to level up and the gold is to purchase more powerful items.

The War of the Ancients is based on two factions. The Nature loving goody-goody Sentinels,

And the terrifying,dreaded, and bad-to-the-bone Scourge…

The real main objective is to destroy each other’s Relic, for the Sentinels its the World Tree and the Scourge got The Frozen Throne. But before you get to the destroying they are defended by towers which are seen above and enemy heroes.

5 heroes on each team can make for a very interesting matchup. Will your team have strong warriors, deadly marksmen, or crafty mages?  Your matches has to usually have combinations that can defeat the enemy team.

To kill enemy heroes is the highlight of this game. You do this by gaining powerful items and skills. Huskarr’s abilities include flaming spears that do damage over time at a cost of his health. So most of Huskarr’s items for me requires more health regeneration items so I can auto-cast it without worry.

KIlling heroes is such a delight as they give bonus gold, there is also a SFX from the narrator commenting on the kill which is always pleasing to hear.

Other ways to earn gold come from hunting neutrals, but one in particular reminds me of WoW raids…Roshan!

He drops an item known to many as the Aegis of Ressurection (used to be a player made item)…and sometimes Cheese which sells for a pretty penny.

Throughout the game Zamboangamer has worked with his allies through a series of ganks, ambushes which really requires teamwork.

Overall there is so much to cover about DotA and there is a lot to learn before you get to the Pro’s if you want to compete, there are internet cafes that sponsor teams who have potential. There are a lot of MOBAs out there such as LoL or HoN that caters to the new generation of players, but obviously this is where it all started.

Graphics: Since this came out in the early 2000’s the game graphics are basic 3D, the various spells, environments, characters, are cool to look at. They may be different from higher more realistic graphics nowadays.

Sound: The game’s music is reminiscent of elven lands, but DotA has special music tracks type in -music special to hear the Power of the Horde song that always gets the blood pumping. The SFX are awesome from sword clashing to fire spells flamin, and the narrator always never gets old. Firstblood!

Gameplay: This game requires active thinking and teamwork. You can always enjoy or get frustrated on kills and deaths. It sometimes brings out the worst or best in you. The game can be as easy or hard depending on the hero of your choosing. So practice, practice, practice 😀

I’d like to reveal what you can learn from DotA in Zamboangamer’s upcoming book; DotA and You. This book will feature every aspect of your life and how you can improve upon what you are already doing. There is too much to cover if I type in in this post, So see ya guys at the next Zamboangamer 😀
